Marcelo Botelho Pupo

Marcelo Botelho Pupo is part of the Private Clients & Family Business Team of Grant Thornton Italy, serving as primary point of contact of the Brazilian Desk. This desk will assist in-bound and out-bound clients to and from Brazil.

Marcelo Botelho Pupo is an Italian Brazilian lawyer specialized in national and international tax consulting, administrative and judicial tax disputes in Brazil, immigration planning for Brazilians interested in living abroad, domestic and international asset planning, focused on the efficiency of the organization of family assets for inheritance purposes and the development of business activities in Brazil and abroad, including in processes of buying and selling companies. 

Before joining Bernoni Grant Thornton, he gained more than 20 years of experience at PwC and in excellent law firms in Brazil, where he led teams and coordinated tax consultancy and litigation work. Since 2017 he has been running an office in Brazil and in Portugal, where he is registered with the Portuguese Bar Association.

Marcelo extensive experience in: 

  • inheritance procedures in Brazil, Germany and in Switzerland. 
  • regularization of Brazilian assets; the recovery of tax credits in Brazil. 
  • structuring of companies in Brazil and abroad. reorganization of the distribution of national and imported products in Brazil, with a reduction of financial costs with the Value Added Tax. 
  • the tax structuring of the purchase and sale of companies, as well as of the assets of companies undergoing judicial reorganization in Brazil.

While dealing with foreign entrepreneurs and investors in Brazil and Brazilians abroad (including Italy, Portugal, the USA, Switzerland, New Zealand, Australia, the UAE and Latin American countries), he was responsible for settling financial assets held abroad, not reported in Brazil; settling assets held in Brazil, not reported abroad; organizing succession processes, with savings in tax on inheritance and donations as well as conducting succession planning.

Author of books and articles in legal matters. Recommended by the magazine Who's Who advisers as specialized in estate and succession planning in Brazil.

Education

Graduated in Law and admitted to the Bar in Brazil and Portugal. He holds a Master's degree in Tax Law (MBA and LLM) and has completed training courses both in Brazil and abroad. He is a Professor of Tax Law at Faculdade Padre Anchieta de Ensino.
